Mentoring Undergraduates in Research: Assessing Understanding and Fostering Independence

May 28, 2025 at 9:00am11:00am EDT

Life Sciences Complex, 106

This workshop for grad students and postdocs is based on the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research’s (CIMER) Entering Mentoring curriculum and will focus on recognizing where undergraduate students are at in their understanding and encouraging them to become independent at an appropriate rate. This is an active workshop where participants work with a community of peers to develop and improve their mentoring skills. Participants will start to develop or enhance their own personal mentoring philosophy and leave with a set of strategies to help with mentoring challenges. The workshop is led by CIMER-trained facilitator Heather Coleman (Biology).

A related workshop, focusing on effective communication and clear expectations, is offered Tuesday, May 27. The workshops are designed to complement each other, but can also stand alone. Each workshop is capped at 24 participants.
