Conversations: The African Union Court on Human and People’s Rights

Can the African Union Court on Human and People’s Rights protect Human Rights for Africans? International courts, including the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, are considered by some African governments to be instruments of neo-colonialism.  Instead of supporting the ICC, some experts feel it would be best for African Union member states to focus on further establishing the African Court on Human and People’s Rights. Formed in 1998, the court is a tribunal meant to protect African rights across the continent.  Sadly the dream of justice within the continent risks falling apart as member states neglect the courts.  Guest speaker Aaron Mwewa, a proud pan Africanist, is a graduate of the Public Diplomacy Program of Syracuse University and a 2015 Washington Mandela Fellow.  He is a lecturer and researcher of Political Science at  the University of Lusaka in Zambia.
