The Water War: Behind the Barricades in Cochabamba

You are invited to a learn about the true story of what happened during the 2000 Water War in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Through this conversation with Rocío Peñaranda Llanos and Dan Moriarty, you will learn about the reality of life in this city nestled in the Andean foothills.  We will explore the historical context that led to the uprising, the events that unfolded during the revolt and how life has changed in Cochabamba since the end of the Water War.

 

 

 

It is highly recommended that attendees watch the movie También la lluvia before this event. The movie is available on Netflix.

Rocío Peñaranda Llanos

Spanish Teacher

Rocío Peñaranda is a language teacher from Cochabamba, Bolivia. She is currently the Founding Spanish Teacher at Girls Global Academy and an instructor at the International Language Institute in Washington, DC, and a translator for the Maryknoll Lay Missioners. Trained at the Alliance Française, the Maryknoll Language Institute, and Universidad Mayor de San Simón in Cochabamba, she has taught Spanish, English, and French to students from pre-school to adult in a variety of settings. She is a musician, playing guitar and singing in Spanish and French. She lives with her husband, Dan Moriarty, and their two teenage sons.

Dan Moriarty

Catholic Missioner and Peace Advocate

Dan Moriarty is the Sustainable Pathways to Peace Coordinator at the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns in Washington, advocating for peace and justice in U.S. foreign policy. He worked for many years in human rights, youth and prison ministry, teaching Conflict Transformation, and building and directing an immersion program with Maryknoll in Bolivia. He has B.A. in Sociology from the College of William and Mary and an M.A. in International Peace Studies from the University of Notre Dame. Dan lives with his wife, Rocío Peñaranda, and their two teenage sons.
