The School of Art’s Summer Academy will present visiting artist Jordan Coons, an award-winning ceramic artist and arts educator currently living in Elmira, New York. Coons specializes in creating sculpted vessels that prioritize both functional and conceptual components to address her thoughts on human nature, fragility, strength, and resilience.

Coons received a B.S. in art education from Buffalo State College (2010) and an M.A. in art education from Maryland Institute College of Art (2017), both in which she concentrated in ceramics. Her creative practice is primarily inspired by and intended to engage students seeking to define their own artistic identities and embolden their search.

The lecture is in person, with a virtual option on Zoom.

School of Art Summer Academy

Each summer, the School of Art in the College of Visual and Performing Arts offers a Portfolio Development Summer Academy for High School Students as part of the University’s Summer College Program. In addition to showing students how to prepare a portfolio for applying to colleges and art schools, the Summer Academy provides an immersive studio experience in painting, printmaking, digital sculpture, comics and graphic novels. Supplemented by field trips to area museums and artists’ studios, the Summer Academy provides an on-campus college experience.
