Syracuse University Talks Business Webinar: Tax Implications Related to COVID-19: What Can Individuals and Businesses Expect?

This webinar will cover tax changes related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including topics relevant to individuals and small businesses/pass-through entities. Discussion topics related to individual will include student loan forgiveness, Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), medical expenses, meals and entertainment deductions, and child tax credit advance payments. Topics that will be discussed regarding businesses/pass-through entities, include IRC section 461(l) on business loss deduction limitations including net operating loss deduction rules and state reporting issues related to working from home or out of state.

Moderator:

Susan Albring is a professor in the Joseph I. Lubin School of Accounting at the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. She was a tax senior for PwC in the New York office prior to earning her Ph.D. at the University of Arizona. She teaches Taxes & Business Strategy in the M.S. in Accounting program. She is an associate editor for Advances in Accounting. She also has published research in journals including Management Science, Journal of American Taxation Association, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, Journal of Accounting, Auditing & Finance, Advances in Accounting, and Issues in Accounting Education.

Panelists:

Mark S. Reid, ’84 MBA, CPA is a senior advisor at Firley, Moran, Freer & Eassa (FMFE), CPA, PC in Syracuse, New York. Prior to this, he was the managing tax partner for FMFE. Reid specializes in partnership and individual taxation, and focuses primarily on the energy generation industry and assisting affluent individuals. He is the treasurer of the ARC of Onondaga Foundation in Syracuse and serves on the Accounting Advisory Board for the Lubin School of Accounting at Whitman. Prior to joining FMFE, Reid served in various capacities in industry and with EY.    

Mitchell Franklin ’99, ’20 M.S., CPA is an associate professor of accounting at Le Moyne College’s Madden School of Business, in Syracuse, NY. His research interests include the impact of tax law on tax policy, and pedagogical issues in both taxation and financial accounting. Franklin has published over fifty articles in journals that include Issues in Accounting Education, Advances in Accounting Education, Journal of Taxation, Tax Notes, and Tax Adviser. He presently serves on the editorial board of Issues in Accounting Education and is an associate editor for The Accounting Educators’ Journal.  Professionally, Franklin currently serves as president of the American Accounting Association Northeast Region and serves as chair of the 2023 American Taxation Association Conference for Teaching and Learning. Prior to joining Le Moyne, he served on the accounting faculty at the Whitman School for 15 years.
