About WPOW:

Women Photojournalists of Washington (WPOW) is a completely volunteer-run nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public about the role of women and those who identify as women in visual journalism and fostering their professional success. We are about building both community and bridges into the industry.

Our membership consists of over 400 seasoned and emerging female photojournalists, photo editors, video journalists, multimedia producers, other industry professionals and yes, students, in the Washington, D.C. area. This annual juried exhibition travels to universities and galleries across the United States. We offer grants, and most importantly, community.

The Exhibition:

The WPOW Photography and Multimedia Exhibition is curated from our members’ submitted work by an annually rotating roster of industry professionals. The current exhibition, 2023-2024, is our 17th annual. Each year, it debuts in a major Washington, D.C. gallery in November and travels during the academic year, with prints exhibited at up to 10 colleges and universities throughout the country. This year’s traveling exhibition is sponsored by Canon.

We offer our exhibition to colleges and universities with a commitment to visual journalism, like the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, to create a bridge to the industry and inspire the next generation of professionals.

The Speaker Series:

The WPOW Speaker Series sends a WPOW member, Jacquelyn Martin, whose work is represented in the exhibition to visit a participating institution to inaugurate the exhibition, show their work and speak to students about the career and craft of visual journalism. This year’s Speaker Series is jointly sponsored by Sony and the Leonian Foundation.

Date: March 28, 2024

Time: Gallery opening | Wall Walk and small reception – 5 p.m.

Speaker: Jacquelin Martin will present in the i3 Center at 6 p.m.
