Dr. Farha Ternikar will present a talk titled, “Muslim South Asian American Women and Culinary Placemaking.”

This talk explores the significance of foodways for Muslim Indian immigrant women in the United States. Immigration continues to be a debated issue across the US, especially in states like Florida, where food can be used to understand how Muslim South Asian women navigate community and identity and experiences of belonging and unbelonging.

Ternikar teaches Gender and Society, Social Inequality and Gender and Feminist theory at Le Moyne College. She has authored several articles on gender, race and religious identity in the Journal of Ethnic StudiesInternational Journal of Contemporary Sociology, and Sociology Compass.

Her most recent book focuses on Muslim women and consumption. Her forthcoming publication is Beyond Hijab in the Fashion Studies Journal.
